About ITL

INNOVATION THROUGH PASSION

For over 50 years, Instrument Transformers Limited (ITL) has been helping power networks operate safely, efficiently, and reliably. Known by many customers as the "go-to CT and VT specialists," we design and manufacture high-quality current transformers (CTs), voltage transformers (VTs), and associated products for Low Voltage (LV), Medium Voltage (MV), and High Voltage (HV) applications.

Our products are trusted across a wide range of critical industries and can be found in gas insulated switchgear (GIS), vessel propulsion systems, substation automation projects, power factor correction installations, tariff metering systems, power generation facilities, and protection schemes worldwide. Wherever accurate measurement and dependable protection are required, ITL solutions are helping keep essential infrastructure running.

In 1973, we established our transformer design and manufacturing facility in East Kilbride, Scotland, UK, and have built a reputation for delivering robust, cost-effective, and technically advanced solutions with the responsiveness that modern industries demand. Customer focus is at the heart of everything we do. We take the time to understand each project's unique requirements and work closely with our customers to develop commercially practical and technically optimised solutions. Our experienced engineering team combines decades of expertise with an innovative approach to solving even the most complex challenges.

As part of our long-term growth strategy, we have continually invested in expanding our manufacturing capabilities, enhancing production efficiency, and broadening our product portfolio. Today, ITL offers far more than transformers alone, providing customers with a comprehensive range of measurement, protection, and monitoring solutions from a single trusted partner.

Our commitment to excellence extends beyond product performance. Alongside our long-established ISO 9001 Quality Management System, we have strengthened our dedication to sustainability and workplace safety through ISO 14001 Environmental Management and ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety certifications. Bolstered by the addition of UL certification on a wide range of transformer finishes supporting our ever-growing American-influenced marketplace customers.

Recognising the rapid growth of renewable energy and the increasing demand for smarter asset management, we established ITL Renewables to support the evolving needs of the onshore and offshore energy sectors. We have also expanded into advanced asset condition monitoring, offering partial discharge monitoring equipment and expert services for gas-insulated switchgear, high-voltage cables, and power transformers. Complementing these capabilities is our growing range of sensors and non-conventional transformers, providing innovative monitoring and protection solutions for overhead lines, underground cable networks, and mixed-circuit protection applications.

Today, we at ITL continue to evolve from a transformer manufacturer into a complete protection, measurement, and asset-reliability partner, helping customers improve network performance, extend asset life, and reduce operational risk worldwide.

What is it we do?

GOOD DESIGN IS GOOD BUSINESS

CT Design

We have over 40 years of experience in current transformer design which gives us the confidence to say that we can provide the very best solution for our customers. With the desire to remove additional “Red Time” from our processes & procedures, in order to compress lead times and thus provide additional service enhancements, we have embarked on a revised lean techniques programme throughout our new facility.

Our custom range of CTs includes protection current transformers & measuring current transformers and the choice of ring-type CT, rectangular CT, square CT, and oval CT (also known as a stadium CT). It can be confusing, right? Luckily, our technical team are professionals and always willing to give you a helping hand to choose the right solution for your project.

Voltage Transformer Design

VT Design

We provide voltage transformers (sometimes referred to as potential transformers or PTs) in three different sizes and for both protection and measurement applications. Our designs are fully suitable for IEC 61869 as well as other international standards such as IEEE (USA) & AS (Australia).

The excellence of our designs comes from our own knowledge and experience in the field as well as from our cooperation with our international partners. We recently moved to new premises and started utilizing revised lean manufacturing system in our manufacture processes in order to offer our customers the shortest lead time possible and designs optimized to match the project specifications.

If you have any questions on how we can help you, please feel free to contact us through our contact form or on our phone number! Looking forward to hear from you!

How quick can we do it?

LEAN MANUFACTURING

Several years ago, ITL recognised that the market was undergoing significant changes, including reduced switchgear & panelboard lead times. Most, if not all, of our competitors, including ITL, were routinely offering lead times of 5,6,7+ weeks for protection current transformers and measuring current transformers, whether it be an indoor transformeroutdoor transformer or severe tropical environment transformer types.

As a customer-focused business, it was clear to us that we had to reduce lead times in a constructive manner. Working closely with our key customers and Scottish Manufacturing Advisory Service (SMAS) we embarked on a program of Lean Manufacture.

Encompassing end-to-end business processes such as designprocurement, administration, and production, with techniques such as 5S, Red/Green analysis & visual manufacturing. We continue to improve our overall service to our customers with competitive lead times and, at customer emergencies, a matter of days wherever possible.

Instrument Transformers Limited has embraced "Lean Principles" throughout our company and imparting actively imparts them within our supply chain. For the reduction and finally the eradication of waste in our products and processes. This will ultimately help promote a positive experience for our global customers and reinforce our position as a leading solution provider.

IMPARTIAL ADVICE

Instrument Transformers Limited Design

With an ever changing industry we understand that switchgear & control panel builders have at times lost CT & VT knowledge skill sets and as such are unable to select the optimised solution for their projects.

At ITL we provide that knowledge bridge, our highly skilled instrument transformer design engineers can advise you on the most appropriate current & voltage transformer for your application.

Via discussions with customers we consider:

  • Ratio of Transformer
  • Burden or VA
  • Accuracy Class (0.2s, 0.2, 0.5s, 0.5, 1 etc.)
  • Protection Relay Used (Class PX, TPS, 5P, 10P etc.)
  • Limiting Dimensions
  • Installation Environment (Indoor / Outdoor)
  • Preferred Transformer Finish (Tape, Resin Encapsulation, Oil Filled)
  • Insulation Level
  • International standard (IEC, ANSI/IEEE, AS, CAN)

We will then submit an offer based on the information provided.
